Gyre is a planet located in the Altair system and is one of the furthest colonies from Earth at 16.7 light-years away from Sol.

History[]

Gyre was colonized in 2133 by the newly established Interplanetary Strategic Alliance, and was found to have a surprisingly oxygen rich, breathable atmosphere, eliminating most of the terraforming process. Gyre is smaller and colder than Vekta, largely ocean, and with millions of tiny islands dotting the surface.[1]

Following the Terracide of Helghan, many surviving Helghast refugees resettled on Gyre. Hera Visari, daughter of Helghast leader Scolar Visari, fled into hiding on Gyre and remained there until her departure for New Helghan.[2]

As of 2390, Gyre was in the middle of a labor crisis in which millions of Helghast labor unions working in the industrial sectors staged protests for better working conditions, and accused factory owners for criminal negligence. The crisis subsequently turned into a planet-wide revolt after the accused factory owners were acquitted and provoking disaffected Helghast to taking control of several major city districts and government buildings.[3] Gyre's military were too weak to quell the unrest and forcing the government to negotiate with the Helghast Workers Union Party to peacefully end the bloodshed.[4]

Subsequently, the Aldridge government was forced to step down after a vote of no confidence from opposition parties. New elections were held for a new government in which the Workers Union Party soon came into power.[5] Although the Workers Union Party promised to implement reforms, they ultimately failed to live up to its promises and instituted a state of repression, which spurred both Helghast and Vektan demonstrators, working together in a rare moment of solidarity, in condemning the new government.[6][7]
